The idea of an university retirement community if the trend catches on can be a wonderful option for people who want to step off the treadmill of the professional life but not check out of life entirely.

As of mid-October, 94 percent of its independent-living apartments were either reserved or being lived in, with the community on track to be full by the end of next summer, said Tom Dorough, 59, the executive director of Mirabella. Far too many elderly have to go through more years than they accounted for living relatively empty, meaningless lives trying in vain to anchor to something meaningful. Being able to help younger generations with the skills and expertise while continuing to learn along the way is a great way to give back and stay mentally alive at the same time. The question of affordability remains and if having a large population of seniors on campus will be to the detriment of the rite of passage experience that college is. That said, the relevance of college education is under threat these days so it would make sense to try creative ways to deal with modern challenges. This is one of many ways to do that.
