Meta's Panopticon

Meta has pretended for the longest time that they are building the future of human connection, but they are really just perfecting the design of the ultimate digital panopticon. Their corporate greed is evident behind a thin veil of every innovation they trot out. But when you pry a bit deeper, there is little redeeming value for the general population. Their road to hell has always been paved with seemingly good intentions, and their latest smart glasses are no exception. There is genuine utility like the integration with Be My Eyes, which is tremendously useful for the visually impaired. I have seen the benefits of firsthand as a long-time volunteer at Be My Eyes. However that goodwill is only a trojan horse for a more invasive and destructive agenda.

The Slate article highlights exactly how this predatory cycle is playing out in our schools. What little chance young people have of getting a real education today is being systematically destroyed by Meta’s surveillance tech. Classrooms that should be safe havens for vulnerability and debate have been transformed into high-stakes sets for unconsented content creation. Students are now terrified to speak up or make mistakes because they know a peer might be secretly recording them for a viral video. This constant state of being perceived and judged has turned the academic environment into a psychological minefield where the fear of a permanent digital footprint outweighs any desire to learn. I cannot blame the students. They are a vulnerable age and these are complex and confusing times for everyone.

The damage does not stop at social anxiety because it strikes at the heart of academic integrity. Professors are now forced to spend their time policing wearable gear and redesigning entire courses just to stay one step ahead of the latest AI-powered cheating tools. Meta’s aggressive push to double production of these glasses shows they could not care less about the havoc they are wreaking in the lives of students. To them, the classroom is just another untapped market for data and a breeding ground for a generation that has been conditioned to believe that privacy is a luxury they no longer deserve.

Meta is a company that thrives on the erosion of the authentic human experience. They take something as noble as helping the blind navigate the world and use it to justify a product that effectively strips everyone else of their autonomy and right not to be observed. We are watching the slow death of the private self in real time, as every hallway and quad becomes a potential studio for Meta’s data and attention harvesting schemas. No amount of good intentions or helpful features can mask the fact that they are built on a foundation that is fundamentally toxic to a functioning, healthy society.
